You can’t fully appreciate Dave Wah’s music until you see him perform. It’s not that he “works” the stage or the crowd, per se, because during most shows he tends to stay in one spot, separated from his audience by a microphone stand and his guitar. Almost Dave Matthews-like, he captures your interest with his mannerisms and expressions, not with dynamic stage presence.

With just his facial expressions (and, of course, a few clever breaks in the music — the kind that let you know something really good is coming), Wah is capable of making you truly hear the lyrics to his songs, feel the happiness or joy, understand the hurt and the anger or the sadness behind every word.

"Ground score” is stuff found on the floor after a concert — at least, according to Urban Dictionary. A simple, even witty term, though one powerful enough to have a significant effect on Zach Bellas.

“We picked up that term, and other sayings, going through the summer festival circuits as fans,” said the 27-year-old guitarist and front man of the Washington, D.C. trio, GroundScore. “The group of kids that travel these festivals throughout the summer — struggling to survive and, at the same time, desperately trying not to go home, if they even have one — had a huge impact on me and the music we make. I felt like not many people were speaking for them. They are sort of a lost or forgotten bunch of kids that travel the country in search of some kind of family or home that they didn’t have with their nuclear families.”

When Skip Dixxon was about 12 years old, he discovered a band that continues to be his all-time favorite. As the years went by, and his talent as a drummer grew, Dixxon did the next best thing to joining the animated rock band known as KISS — he formed his own flamboyant foursome, face paint and all.

“The station I worked for at the time was looking for a Halloween promotion and since KISS was doing a Pay Per View event that Halloween, I decided [that] instead of just watching the band on TV at a bar, … I would gather some of my musician friends and get dressed up and play after,” says Dixxon, who now works as a radio deejay with Ocean 98.1 in Ocean City.

Bands of Summer IV

Each summer, countless solo artists and bands of musicians make their way to Ocean City, hoping for a chance to entertain the immeasurable number of people visiting the area —either for the season or for the week. And most of them, it seems, spend the duration of their gigs working off a set list that consists primarily of cover songs, but with a handful of originals mixed in for good measure.

There are a few acts, however, that prefer to dedicate their time on stage to songs they created — the ones they believe best show their talent as musicians.
